In February 2012, Art in Halland invited visual artists to apply for residence scholarships to London and Argentina. Based on the applications, the jury decided that the grants should be awarded to the local artists Mandi Gavois, Frida Franker and Kim Johansson.
Mandi Gavois (born in 1982) was raised in Okome outside Falkenberg. He has graduated from School of Photography, Gothenburg and is awarded the grant for Argentina with the motivation of “his determination to develop his photography and sculpture as well as his artistic approach to our nearby surroundings“.
Frida Franker (born 1982) comes from Gottskär, Onsala ad has studied at the Valand Art School, Gothenburg. Franker is awarded one of the two grants to London “for her consistent, probing work with film and photography, as well as her ability to see and interpret the extraordinary in everyday life“.
Kim Johansson (born 1986) grew up in Halmstad, graduated from Academy of Arts in Trondheim and is currently studying the Master programme at Valand Art School, Gothenburg. Johansson is awarded the other grant to London “for his drawings, animations and video works that explores the opportunities and possibilities of visual arts in the borderland between theatre and other art forms“
In 2012, the scholarships were awarded for the first time ever. There were 27 applications in total. The jury consisted of Ýrr Jónasdóttir, Manager at Ystad Art Museum and representatives from Art in Halland.
