Water reflections 2025

In the exhibition From a Distance, artist Behjat Omer Abdulla depicts how war can be experienced from various perspectives. Through his drawings and videos, he creates and shares visual worlds from personal and collective memories. The exhibition attempts to offer an opportunity for us to recognise one another through our own subjective experiences.

Since far back in history, people, goods and ideas have been transported to and from Halland. On view in the exhibition Over the Seas are older and contemporary artists’ interpretations that bring those journeys, those ships and the sea to life for us. It also includes objects whose histories extend far beyond Halland’s boundaries.

Here viewers find paintings of a world in the distant future, after the end of the human era, where everything has started over again. Unfamiliar landscapes, ecosystems and biotypes take shape alongside unfamiliar seas, waterways, skies and atmosphere.

The artist group SUPERFLEX has been invited by Halmstad municipality to explore how rising sea levels impact urban space. That project will lead to the exhibition All is Water at Halmstads konsthall. SUPERFLEX has long engaged with alternative models for the creation of social organisation. For SUPERFLEX, the best idea might come from a fish.

The installation Cut Tongue addresses a scarred and neglected water landscape: the mouth of the Viskan River in the Kloster Fjord. Expedition Art is a group exhibition that shows works by artists who all took part in the Swedish Polar Secretariat’s art programme, among them Lars Lerin, Efva Lilja, Ida Rödén and the artist duo Bigert & Bergström. The programme allows artists to join the secretariat’s polar expeditions and explore the link between art and science.

Sweden’s west coast, with its distinctive light and landscape, has made an impression on the work of many painters. In the exhibition Coast, Sea & Water: The Halmstad Group and Friends, we encounter the coastal landscape as interpreted by a number of artists from the 1910s to the 1950s.

In Tori Wrånes’ installation BIG WATER, we find fur-clad underwater creatures as they move to the rhythm of the sea. These creatures have fled from the exploitation of our consumer society. Instead, they live in a parallel world in which they are liberated from consumption, gender identity and body obsession.

A beach is a world of its own, a transitional zone between sea and land. With its own rules and norms, it exists in parallel to but separately from other places. Here society’s usual rules are to some extent upended, and other kinds of relationships, behaviours and meanings are allowed to emerge. Society’s relationship to water is becoming increasingly fraught, with rising sea levels and growing risk of draught and flooding, even in Sweden. In this exhibition we present proposals for a better interaction with water, with projects in the fields of design, architecture and urban planning. Rethinking the Little Mermaid is Kolbrún Inga Söring’s first solo exhibition in Sweden. Söring’s art explores body modification, desire and self-representation outside of cis-heteronormativity. Through their reinterpretation of H. C. Andersen’s fairy tale The Little Mermaid, the artist takes a broader view that includes multiple perspectives.

Lennart Alves is a photographer with a particular interest in how the human world meets the sea. He weaves for us a story in which the unwanted becomes sublime, the sea becomes a stage, and mankind’s traces become subjects of their own.
